A Blueprint for Builder’s Lean: Six Simple Steps for the Field to Follow

Overview:

A firm’s adoption of Lean concepts typically initiates at the top of the org chart, via the executive leadership team’s buy-in, and then filters down into the field where the front-line practitioners do the tangible work of construction. In the face of pressing project deadlines and heavily competing priorities, this information can feel intimidating, overwhelming, and easy to ignore in favor of what’s already known and comfortable. Often, the value of Lean practices are inarticulately or ineffectively conveyed, and superintendents can find it difficult to connect the dots from academic, theoretical Lean philosophies to the immediate relevancy in their daily work. Recognizing the importance for field personnel’s holistic understanding of Lean’s benefits – starting with WHY and ending with HOW – we seek to provide a true bottom-up version of “Builder’s Lean” that allows Last Planners to make immediate changes and transform their projects.

A Blueprint for Builder’s Lean speaks directly to the “boots on the ground,” simplifying and clearly articulating the benefits of six primary Lean concepts, and delivering them in a highly-relatable, immediately-applicable, and field-friendly manner. Attendees will walk away with an easy-to-follow blueprint and implementation plan to lead their team and dramatically improve their project delivery process through the following principles:

#1 – Daily Huddles
#2 – Visual Communication
#3 – Constraint Management
#4 – Pull Planning
#5 – Last Planner System and Look-Ahead
#6 – Root Cause Analysis through Percent Plan Complete (PPC)

A Blueprint for Builder’s Lean illustrates the immediate value and provides a how-to guide specifically for field personnel that will allow them to begin making meaningful changes in their teams and on their projects.
